ABOUT THE APC

Mission Statement
The mission of the Accabonac Protection Committee is to protect, enhance and restore the ecological integrity of Accabonac Harbor and its watershed.

History and Activities
The Accabonac Protection Committee ("APC") was founded in 1985 by citizens of the community concerned about the threat of real estate development around Accabonac Harbor. Since its inception, the APC has grown to represent over 600 households. The APC works to raise awareness among area residents about issues affecting Accabonac and its watershed and recruits active participation in projects that improve the Harbor's environment. The APC meets regularly with elected and appointed officials from all levels of government to lobby on behalf of the Harbor.

Other APC activities include:

Our annual meeting is held in September at a home on the harbor where members and friends can socialize as well as acquaint themselves with issues related to the harbor. Our booth at the annual summer Fisherman's Fair in the Springs Historic District provides fun and information for children and adults through wildlife games, informational maps and brochures.

Please see our Schedule for more information on upcoming events.

Current Issues and Projects
The APC is actively involved in several important projects and issues currently affecting Accabonac Harbor and its environs:

Membership
Membership in the APC is free, and open to anyone interested in Accabonac Harbor or its watershed area. To join the APC, please complete and submit by mail our membership form. The APC keeps its mailing list completely confidential.

Operation
The APC functions through a volunteer Steering Committee which meets at the homes of Steering Committee members monthly throughout the year, usually on the first Monday of each month at 9 a.m. Please check the Springs news section of local papers, or call 631-324-2435, for details on our next meeting.

Funding
Membership in the APC is free; private donations provide all operating funds, and contributions of any size are greatly appreciated. The APC gratefully acknowledges significant contributions by the Overbrook Foundation; these contributions have made this website possible. The APC has also for many years enjoyed a close relationship with Group for the East End, a professionally staffed, not-for-profit environmental advocacy and education organization that is dedicated to protecting the environment, rural character and quality of life for the entire Peconic Bay region through public advocacy and public education. Part of Group for the East End’s environmental advocacy work includes partnering with local citizen-based organizations and, beginning in 1999, with the help of a generous private donation, the Group has provided a staff person to advise the APC, providing support in the areas of administration, fundraising, education, research and advocacy.

Contributions to the APC are NOT deductible for tax purposes. As a grassroots, volunteer, watchdog organization, the APC has typically relied on smaller contributions, and it wishes to retain the flexibility to speak and act as politically as necessary on behalf of Accabonac. Individuals and organizations wishing to make substantial tax-deductible financial contributions for the benefit of the Accabonac Protection Committee are encouraged to contact Group for the East End, (631) 537-1400.

Please call (631) 324-2435 if you are interested in making a donation.
